(Grade 11, required) (Y) Credits: 1.0 each year Course Numbers: 56401 and 56411 Prerequisite: World & American Studies In this two year course students will embark on an in-depth study of 20th century issues: the evolution of world war, political movements, national and international challenges of one-party states, establishment and work of international organizations, the state and its relationship with religion and with minorities, and the Cold War. Students will also study topics from the region of the Americas such as: the colonial period, wars of independence, evolution of new governments and confederations, Africans in the Americas, U.S. civil war, late 19th century Latin America, Canada between confederation and the First World War, US in late 19th and early 20th century, Mexican Revolution, 20th century Caribbean countries, domestic policies, foreign policies, U.S. civil rights movement, women, indigenous peoples and minorities in the Americas, and hemispheric relations. Students will gain valuable knowledge about an ever-present world history that has direct bearing on current issues. This class is excellent for students who have an interest in history, politics, government, or sociology. IB Final Assessments: External - Three examinations: document-based, long essay, 5 short essays completed at the conclusion of the final year. Internal - paper on the study of an in-depth history topic.
