Okma Weekly Message December 11, 2020

Greetings IA Families,

Winter break begins at the end of the day, next Friday December 18 and classes resume January 4, 2021. We are asking that students pick up ANYTHING they need from school by 3:00 PM next Friday, December 18. This includes any textbooks, literature books, work packets, art supplies, etc.

They will NOT be able to pick up anything from the building over the two-week break.

Please remember that during this crisis, any families suffering from food insecurity can access meals through their local district.

Applications for the Class of 2025 are now being accepted.  If you have an 8th grader or know off any that are interested in attending our world class school, please direct them to our Prospective Students page to fill out an application.

The application window for the class of 2025 closes on January 24, 2021. Only applicants who apply before January 24th will be considered for the respective district lotteries. Late applications will be added to the bottom of the district waitlist in the order they are received.

Interested prospective families still have one more opportunity to attend a Virtual Information Session (Q & A) on January 13 at 7:30 PM - Families are encouraged to pre-register via this link Pre-Registration

before attending the Virtual Information Session

Please be specific when calling for early release or absence from class. Please state exact times for partial absences so it can be recorded in the proper class period.  You are always welcome to call back to make any corrections/updates to an original call, if things change.  Thanks so much!

Student Equity Council Cultivates Equity Within Bloomfield Hills Schools

images of students in virtual meeting

Over the summer of 2020, students from Bloomfield Hills High School and International Academy joined together to form a new student group, called the Student Equity Council (SEC).    This group of dedicated students has weekly virtual meetings, and has worked tirelessly to create a restorative, equitable school culture across all Bloomfield Hills Schools.  Their Mission Statement reads, “We work to foster and preserve an equitable, justice-based learning environment across the Bloomfield Hills School District by holding the district and community accountable in instances of discrimination and injustice, and creating policy and programs to cultivate equity.”

Perry Initiative Logo

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Perry Initiative has paused all in-person programs for the foreseeable future. While we are disappointed we cannot meet new participants at Perry Outreach Programs, we are still committed to our mission of inspiring women to pursue careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. As we navigate through these extraordinary times, we will be transitioning to virtual learning.

We’re very excited to announce upcoming sessions of the Perry Virtual Experience in January 2021. The Perry Virtual Experience is a free, 2.5-hour, interactive online experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. Participants will hear from women leaders in these fields and dive into online orthopaedic simulations and biomechanics experiments. Additional information can be found on our website: https://perryinitiative.org/pve/

Women in high school and college who have an interest in science, medicine and/or engineering are now invited to register for a session of the Perry Virtual Experience. We would appreciate it if you could pass along this information to any educators or students you may know. Students should be directed to fill out the online registration for one session that best fits their schedule. Most sessions are available to participants in any location, but some sessions are for a focused geographic area. Dates and details for each session can be found at https://perryinitiative.org/calendar/

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you may have. Again, we sincerely appreciate your help in helping to spread the word about the Perry Virtual Experience.

All the best,

Hannah Heuschneider, Program Coordinator

TEACHER GRANTS: Thank you to the IA Okma team for your hard work, dedication, and compassion you show to our students.

Ten teachers were approved for a total of $20,588.63 in grants. We were fortunate to have the support of generous Okma parent donors this year which allowed the PTIA a significant increase to the grant budget, allowing us to conduct two rounds of grants instead of just one. Many items requested were technology related, including the purchase of 15 laptops. Many items will be used to support teachers and students with remote learning.

Teacher grants will open again at the start of the next school year. Next year, our budget will return to normal for teacher grants.

The PTIA is proud of our IA Okma team! We appreciate all you have done for our students and we support you.
