Okma Weekly Message December 18, 2020

Greetings IA Families,

Winter break begins at the end of the day today and classes resume January 4, 2021. The building will be closed over the two week break.  We hope that you all have a restful winter break and remain happy and healthy throughout the coming new year.

While the staff sorely missed being together this holiday season and enjoying the annual holiday luncheon we have been treated to in the past by the PTIA, we are deeply appreciative of their thoughtfulness in providing a Target gift card to the staff.  We know the reason we have the best students is because we have the best parents!  This is a  sincere thank you from all the staff.

Please remember that during this crisis, any families suffering from food insecurity can access meals through their local district.

Applications for the Class of 2025 are now being accepted.  If you have an 8th grader or know off any that are interested in attending our world class school, please direct them to our Prospective Students page to fill out an application.

The application window for the class of 2025 closes on January 24, 2021. Only applicants who apply before January 24th will be considered for the respective district lotteries. Late applications will be added to the bottom of the district waitlist in the order they are received.

Interested prospective families still have one more opportunity to attend a Virtual Information Session (Q & A) on January 13 at 7:30 PM - Families are encouraged to pre-register via this link Pre-Registration

before attending the Virtual Information Session

Please be specific when calling for early release or absence from class. Please state exact times for partial absences so it can be recorded in the proper class period.  You are always welcome to call back to make any corrections/updates to an original call, if things change.  Thanks so much!

BAttle of the books

Join Troy Athens, Troy High, the International Academy and the Troy Public Library in the book battle of the year!

Books are selected by a student committee with final librarian approval. These students read potential books over the summer. The books must have been published in 2020. They are typically young adult books, with a few adult books. The various reading levels are designed to capture the attention of reluctant readers all the way to AP/IB advanced readers.

Perry Initiative Logo

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Perry Initiative has paused all in-person programs for the foreseeable future. While we are disappointed we cannot meet new participants at Perry Outreach Programs, we are still committed to our mission of inspiring women to pursue careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. As we navigate through these extraordinary times, we will be transitioning to virtual learning.

We’re very excited to announce upcoming sessions of the Perry Virtual Experience in January 2021. The Perry Virtual Experience is a free, 2.5-hour, interactive online experience for high school and college-aged women who are interested in pursuing careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. Participants will hear from women leaders in these fields and dive into online orthopaedic simulations and biomechanics experiments. Additional information can be found on our website: https://perryinitiative.org/pve/

Women in high school and college who have an interest in science, medicine and/or engineering are now invited to register for a session of the Perry Virtual Experience. We would appreciate it if you could pass along this information to any educators or students you may know. Students should be directed to fill out the online registration for one session that best fits their schedule. Most sessions are available to participants in any location, but some sessions are for a focused geographic area. Dates and details for each session can be found at https://perryinitiative.org/calendar/

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you may have. Again, we sincerely appreciate your help in helping to spread the word about the Perry Virtual Experience.

All the best,

Hannah Heuschneider, Program Coordinator

Note from Staff Appreciation Committee To show our appreciation to our amazing teachers and staff, the PTIA gave each one a Target gift card for the holidays and included the following poem.  Our teachers and staff always go above and beyond and this year, they've done even more. We greatly appreciate the efforts of each and every one!

Note from PTIA Board The PTIA truly appreciates everyone's support this year. Staff, parents, and students have given it their all. The staff and parent community have given so much love and support. Our kids are so lucky to have you all in their lives. Please know that your love is what makes our kids so resilient.

Whatever is beautiful. Whatever is meaningful. Whatever brings you happiness. May it be yours this holiday season and throughout the coming year. Goodbye 2020! Let's do this, 2021!
