Okma Weekly Message March 12, 2021

Greetings IA Community!

We still love having more kids back.  And  we are still  hoping and praying for the day they are all here. In the meantime, we are staying the course and adhering to protocols. In particular, if your child is a senior, please encourage them to begin attending in person if they feel safe in doing so. We have plenty of room for seniors and we miss them.

The parking lot is seeing an uptick and for those of you who may not have seen the helpful parking protocol video, we are providing it again.  The point here is to keep us all safe outside as well as inside.

Looking forward to next year, you will find the vacation dates have been loaded in to our calendar for your planning purposes. The first day of school is August 17.

March is Women's History Month. Please check out this amazing resource created by BH parent and family ambassador Leah Abel.

Regeneron High School Science Talent Search

This week, IA Okma senior Vivian Yee (who was selected as one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science talent search), will engage in a special final week, where finalists will compete for $1.8 million in awards, including a whopping $250,000 for the top winner.

She was recently featured in an article in Forbes magazine where Science contributor,  Kevin Anderton described her:  "Vivian, 17, focused her project on how socially vulnerable communities are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. She collected data on non-biological factors that impacted health outcomes and then created a mathematical modeling approach that takes into account social factors when studying infectious diseases. Her results showed that vulnerable communities experienced higher rates of Covid-19 transmission and death. She was also able to identify public health interventions that would help minimize health care disparities in pandemic response. As part of her end goal, she submitted her findings to the Congressional Coronavirus Task Force in hopes that it will inform future legislation and help ensure health equity."

Vivian was also featured on NPR this morning and NBC Nightly News last night.  We are certain you will all be as fascinated as we are with her incredible work. We wish her the best of luck in the finals.
