Okma Weekly Message October 9, 2020
Greetings IA Families,
The Hybrid Schedule is in full swing and we are very impressed with how it is going. These are certainly new challenges for the teaching and support staff. Nevertheless, they are doing an amazing job and appreciate all your support.
Helping your student be prepared for each day really helps our school community be successful this fall!
With that, conferences are coming up and you should have gotten the directions in an email from Dr. Smith. They are provide below as well for your reference.
Sign-ups beginning on Sunday October 11th at 7pm - Sign up for Conferences here
IA-Okma Directions to Register for Virtual Parent-Guardian-Teacher Conferences
We are pleased to continue the online system to schedule Parent/Guardian and Teacher Conferences. This system – Conference Manager – is user-friendly for families and was very successful last year. This fall all conferences will be conducted virtually through Zoom.
This year conferences will be the following times:
Wednesday October 28th: 1:00-4:00 pm
Wednesday October 28th: 5:00-8:00 pm
Thursday October 29th: 5:00-8:00 pm
The process for booking conferences is broken into the following steps:
Step 1: Pre-Register here Conference Sign-up
This can be done at any time. It is suggested you PRE-REGISTER prior to Sunday, October 11th. You can set up a Parent Account by following the link above. Click the REGISTER NOW button and complete the registration form. Your login credentials (email and password) will remain in the system to make it easy to access the Conference Manager in the future.
If you used the system last year, then you just need to log in. If you forget your password, you can select the “Forgot Your Password” link and have it sent to you.
In order to ensure that your email program does not block emails sent from the Conference Manager, we suggest adding firstname.lastname@example.org to your address book.
Step 2: Conference Manager Opens to Parents/Guardians on Sunday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m.
You can access the Parent Login Page using the link in the Confirmation Email. If you do not receive a Confirmation Email, you can login by going directly to https://ia-okma.schoolsoft.com
Step 3: Book your Time Slots for the teachers
Select the session you want to attend (Wednesday afternoon, Wednesday evening, Thursday evening). Please be aware of the following details:
Mr. LaNoue is not available for conferences because he is on paternity leave
Ms. McCarty (Ms. Stevens’ Long Term Substitute) is only available on the Wednesday sessions because she is split between campuses
Mrs. Peplinski will only be available on Wednesday afternoon because she is split between campuses
Mr. Connolly’s conference sessions may fall outside of the regular time slots
Then select the teachers you need to see. In general, parents will visit 5 or 6 of the 8 teachers on the schedule. You do not need to meet with the seminar teacher.
Now you will see each teacher’s schedule for that session. Please try to leave five minutes after the end of one session before booking the next. For example, if a conference is from 6:00 to 6:05, please try to select the next one to start at 6:10 to give yourself time to transition between teachers.
After booking your appointments you can print off your schedule. You will also receive an email containing the teacher name and time of the conference. You can log into the system at any time to view your bookings, print, cancel or re-schedule appointments. You have the option of submitting comments or questions to the teacher as part of the booking process.
Prior to October 28th you will receive detailed instructions regarding joining conferences via Zoom.

IA Okma Junior, Morgan Cook named Rising Star
Detroit Jewish News, the JCC of Metropolitan Detroit, Jfamily, and the Youth Professionals Network have named Morgan Cook, 16, of West Bloomfield a Rising Star.
"Morgan is a junior at the International Academy and a member of Temple Shir Shalom, where she belongs to SSTY. Morgan is not the kind of student that cares about what the “cool kids” are doing, she just cares about what the right thing to do is, say the leaders at Shir Shalom. “She is accepting of everyone that crosses her path and, although she can be soft spoken, it is because she is a deep thinker,” they note.
Morgan not only worked hard to go to International Academy but pushes the boundaries of her schedule by involvement with Biff Radio at Bloomfield Hills High School and the International Academy News. She is on the Jewish Federation Teen Board and is the social action vice president of SSTY.
She is a writer for her school newspaper, and she still finds time to pursue music, playing piano competitively for the MSBOA solo and ensemble, the Federation Competition at Schoolcraft College and the American Guild of Music Regional Festival."
If you have news about your student, we would love to feature it here! Please send to Mary Miner - email@example.com
Grab a friend, join the International Academy team, sign up the family, or compete alone! Run to support SOS, Schools Offer Support, a BPS organization that helps families in need. 5K and 1 Mile Race options available. Virtual race taking place October 8th - 18th, 2020.
There will be an award for the school with the highest participation rate. There will be awards for the top male and female student at each school and there will be an award for the top male and female BPS staff member. Team awards for fastest team and largest team. The top male and female runner overall will win a Gazelle Sport Gift Card.
The beauty of the virtual race is you get to run it on your own time on the day that works best for you (as long as it is between October 8 - 18).
This is a great chance to participate in a consortium event. We can show our IA pride while supporting a great charity run by Birmingham Public Schools. Sign up today. Run or walk this weekend. Take your dog/kids for a 1mile/5k walk or run.
PLEASE join me Make sure you join Team International Academy during the registration process.

Remote Learning Attendance Reminders~
- Calling the attendance line at (248)341-5910 or emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org is the only sure way that your message is received. Emailing an individual staff member may not ensure that the message will be received.
- If a student will be missing a class they need to be called out with a specified reason, ortho, doctor appointment, home school sports, funeral etc.
- If a student will be logging off early, they MUST have a call into the attendance line or they will be marked an unexcused absence for the entire block. They are not allowed to just disappear in the middle or towards the end of a session. We do our best to get the ePasses out, but at times that doesn't happen. The important thing is that the call into attendance by a parent/guardian has been made. Make sure your teacher knows what you are doing.
- If you leave for a mid day appointment or log in later the the beginning of the day, either reply to the ePass you received or send me a note letting me know when you logged back in, so I can mark your attendance correctly. You can email: iaattendance@
- Our arrival times to classes have NOT changed. Students must be logged in and ready to go at the beginning of class. If they arrive late (within the first 5 minutes), they will be marked TARDY. If they log in AFTER 5 minutes, they will be marked an unexcused absence.
- We all understand that while working remotely, internet issues may occur. These issues will be noted by your teacher on a case by case basis.

Is your USA flag ready to be retired?
Is your flag faded, torn, damaged, or perhaps you just do not fly it anymore? IA Senior Mitchell Swayze is working on his Eagle Scout project and is decommissioning USA flags. You can drop your flags off outside the office in the red, white, and blue donation box with a sign attached. The donation box will reside there until Veteran's Day (November 11th), so please send in your flags before then!
